After getting trashed by the mean shorebreak at Ballaugh I followed Neil on
a mad race across the island to another launch spot. There was no way I
would have launched from this spot on my own in these conditions, but it
certainly looked pretty good out there so off we went. I ripped the pulley
off my 5m as I was rigging, so ended up going out with my 4.5m instead,
which was actually a blessing in disguise as the wind went ballistic. Just
getting down to the beach through a narrow staircase was an adventure and I
got pinned to the wall by a gust for a while. Then it was a launch off the
rocks into deep water, followed by a swim upwind close to a big concrete
wall which the waves were bouncing off to give us enough room to make a few
tacks out around the rocks of the point. Once out beyond these rocks it was
a matter of blasting out beyond the headland avoiding a big rock in the
middle of the bay and playing on the chop out there. The wind was perfect
for my 4.5m and with the sun shining it was a perfect session in a new
location. I would liked to have seen the place at low tide before sailing
there really as I found myself on top of some shallow rocks on a few of my
failed gybes, but once the tide did drop off, a little sandy beach was
exposed and things seemed a little less sketchy.
